Happiness VS Joy…

IMG_3843How can someone measure happiness? Is it by the amount of times they laugh in a day? Smile in a day? Is it a feeling that’s inside them, like their heart is smiling. Can we measure that? Is it by the amount of times someone says “you look so happy.”? Is it by the amount of “good things” in our lives? And is happiness all there is in life we should be looking for?
Happiness is a great thing. But it also can be here one day then gone the next. It’s fleeting and difficult to measure. It’s also easy to fake. I can smile with the best of them while I’m dying on the inside. I can be the life of a party while wishing I was someone or somewhere else. I can fake happy. But joy that’s different.
Joy you have no matter what as a believer, through your hope and faith in God. Joy is not because of my circumstances, but in spite of my circumstances, through God I can have joy. I can be assured that God has me and my life in His hands. And ultimately everything will be okay. Joy is even though I might not be able to smile right now, I know I will again. With that comes hope in every situation we might face. It’s not an easy place to get to. I’m still far from being there all the time. But it has gotten easier the more I read His word and spend time with Him. James 1:2-4 tells us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
See trials are a part of life. Many of them, not just 1 or 2 and then we are free of them. So if we are just looking to be happy, we will struggle a lot in this life. How do we get there though? Finding joy in the midst of a chaotic sometimes heart crushing life?
Like is said above, first get into His word, start at just 10 minutes a day. Pray, but they don’t have to all be formal, I speak to God as a friend. I’m very open with God. He already knows it all anyway. Just make sure you do it respectfully. šŸ™‚ Then look for a way to help others, even during your own struggle. It can be praying for others, donating items to shelters, volunteering, whatever it is you want to do to be there for somebody else. Watching others smile and being thankful is quite contagious. And make a conscious decision to praise and worship God through it all. The good and bad in life. Because He deserves it, and it helps put your mind where it belongs. Instead of your focus only going to the situation or problem. These are a few ways that have helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Joy is not something that comes easily like happiness. But once you can find it, it stays with you a lot longer than happiness does. Happiness comes from the world. Joy comes from the Lord. And we know what comes from Him is eternal. ā¤
~Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.-Pastor Rick Warren
